Notice: the ICE Online Store and Office will open for limited services July 12, 2021.

The ICE office and Online Store will be remain closed until July 11, 2021.

Due to building construction and limited staff the ICE office will remain closed through July 11. There will be no summer Fun With Chemistry Camps this year. The ICE Online Store will reopen on July 12, but only for limited service because of the restricted access to our facilities. From July 12-30 ICE will process and ship SMALL orders once a week to domestic locations only. We will aim for a processing time of 5-10 business days from receipt of order to shipping, operating within the constraints of very limited access. If you have questions, please contact us by email at iceorders@chem.wisc.edu. We will check and respond to emails twice a week during the summer. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through a partial re-opening.

Virtual Summer Chemistry Camps 2020

Because we can’t offer in-person Camps this year, ICE has adapted some of the activities done in Chemistry Camps so children can do them using materials commonly found around the home. We would like to hear from you about your experience with our virtual chemistry camps. Email us at chemcamps@chem.wisc.edu to let us know how the virtual camps went for you.

Activities for Children Entering Grades 5 through 8

Grades K through 4

The activities below are suitable for virtual campers entering grades K through 4, although older siblings (or even parents!) can join in or watch. These activities need an older person (parent or sibling) to mentor participants and perhaps read the activity to children who are not yet readers. Children entering grades 3 and 4 will need less supervision. These activities are adapted from ICE’s Super Science Connections science program for K-3 teachers.

Use the links below to Get Started and have some fun:

The next two activities are related and are better done in the order given.

The next four activities are related but can be done in any order.

Grades 5 through 8

The activities below are suitable for virtual campers entering grades 5 through 8, although younger siblings (or even parents!) can join in or watch. Use the links below to Get Started and have some fun:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Institute for Chemical Education (ICE) was founded in 1983 with a mission to communicate science and make science more accessible for everyone. The Institute for Chemical Education has used the acronym, ICE, since its founding. Unfortunately, our acronym ICE is not unique and is also the acronym used by federal agency, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), established in 2003. The Institute for Chemical Education (ICE) has no relation or communication with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Please visit the “About Us ” page for more information about the University of Wisconsin-Madison Institute for Chemical Education.
